The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance
Throughout this cartoon journey for preteens, the fairy community focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He’s only a bit more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly gnome he had imagined.
An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for children). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings together. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are said to be self-centered types, prone to stealing whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.
Of course, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression
There aren’t very many children’s animations aimed at the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever teenagers view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.
The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
